Democratic Coalition Proposes Tax Exemption Bill for Single Fathers
The Democratic Coalition (DK) has introduced a bill aimed at extending the personal income tax (PIT) exemption—currently available to mothers with two children—to fathers who are raising their children alone. This proposal was announced by the party’s parliamentary spokesperson, Kálmán Olga, during an online press conference on Saturday.
Olga challenged the ruling Fidesz party to decide whether they prioritize garnering votes or genuinely enhancing the quality of life for families with children. She urged government members of parliament to support the DK’s initiative if they truly value family welfare.
The spokesperson criticized the government’s apparent focus on families with multiple children, arguing that it’s unjust to place greater value on these families. "No child should be valued less than another, regardless of whether they have siblings," Olga asserted, emphasizing that "we have a responsibility for every child, even if they don’t have a sibling."
She further noted that the current income tax benefits disproportionately favor those with higher earnings, which serves to deepen existing social inequalities. Highlighting the challenges faced by single fathers, Olga remarked that these individuals must excel both at work and in their parenting roles. Citing data from the 2022 census, she revealed that in 64,000 families, it is the father who carries the primary responsibility for parenting.
As a left-wing party, the DK has long championed the belief that every child deserves equal consideration. Olga stated that a left-leaning government would not "discriminate between children" but instead implement a responsible, nurturing family policy.
