Hungarian Women Rescued from Forced Prostitution Ring in Belgium
Authorities in Belgium and Hungary have successfully dismantled a crime ring that was involved in luring Hungarian women to Belgium and forcing them into prostitution. The Hungarian police website reported on Tuesday that a 34-year-old Hungarian woman was arrested for recruiting at least 20 young women under false pretenses since 2018. These women, who were promised cleaning and other jobs in Oostende, were later exploited for sexual services.
It was revealed that some of the victims were underage when they were recruited, highlighting the severity of the crimes committed by the perpetrators. A male suspect was also apprehended for his role in luring the women, exploiting them, and subjecting them to threats and violence.
The arrests in Hungary and Belgium have led to significant progress in dismantling the criminal network. In Belgium, six individuals, including the ringleader, were arrested along with the seizure of cash, gold, and luxury cars. Europol played a crucial role in facilitating information exchange, providing operational support, and coordinating activities between the two countries.
During the operation, authorities seized high-end vehicles, luxury goods, digital equipment, and cash, while identifying and ensuring the safety of potential victims. The collaboration between Belgian and Hungarian authorities, with the support of Eurojust, demonstrates a strong commitment to combating human trafficking and exploitation.
The case, initiated by Eurojust in February 2023, underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational crimes. The successful joint investigation team effort serves as a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in combating trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals.
