Hungary Provides Financial Support to Lebanon Army for Stability
Hungary has decided to allocate 400 million forints (EUR 988,000) from the European Peace Facility to the Lebanon army in order to ensure the stability of the country, announced Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister, during a visit to Beirut on Tuesday. The goal is for the Lebanese regulars to take over the responsibility of maintaining security in Lebanon from the militias.
The crisis in the Middle East has had a severe impact on Lebanon, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of people, stated Szijjártó. He mentioned that the situation only began to improve after a ceasefire was signed with Israel. Hungary is in favor of extending the truce with the ultimate objective of achieving lasting peace. It is believed that a stable Lebanon is crucial for regional stability, which in turn, affects European security. Szijjártó warned of a potential influx of “millions of people” to Europe if the situation in the Middle East worsens.
During his visit, Szijjártó also called for the repatriation of the 1.5-2 million Syrian refugees currently residing in Lebanon. He emphasized the importance of establishing conditions for their safe return to their home country, which would alleviate the burden on Lebanon and contribute significantly to maintaining stability in the country. Szijjártó highlighted the presence of a UN peacekeeping contingent as a critical factor in ensuring security, noting that Hungary has 16 soldiers serving in the unit.
Szijjártó acknowledged the strong Christian community in Lebanon and the significance of electing a Christian president. Hungary has shown support for Christian communities globally through various projects aimed at their development and strengthening. The Hungarian government also advocates for the EU-Lebanon Association Council to convene promptly and urged the EU to increase its budget for reconstruction in Lebanon, estimated at 12-15 billion dollars.
In conclusion, Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s commitment to supporting measures that promote peace, tranquility, and stability in Lebanon. The country values its friendship with Lebanon and will continue to play a role in contributing to a secure Middle East.
