Hungary to take Strongest Possible Action Against Illegal Migration During EU Presidency
Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, has announced that Hungary plans to take strong action against illegal migration during its EU Presidency this year. The statement came following a meeting with his Greek counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis in Athens.
Szijjártó highlighted the emergence of new routes for migration to South-East Europe, particularly Greece, which is facing increased pressure and new migration routes. He emphasized the need for Hungary to address the issue of illegal migration during its six-month presidency of the European Union.
The two ministers agreed on the importance of protecting the EU’s external borders and the sovereign right of each country to decide who they allow in and who they want to live with.
Additionally, Szijjártó stressed the need to prevent security challenges affecting Europe, such as the crisis in Ukraine and the Middle East, from spreading, identifying it as a key issue for both Hungary and Greece.
During his visit to Greece, Szijjártó also met with the Greek, Bulgarian, and Romanian Ministers for Energy. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of energy supply and the need to attract new sources and routes of supply. Moreover, he welcomed the increase in the capacity of the natural gas pipeline linking Bulgaria to Greece and the strengthening of cooperation with Athens on key security issues for Hungary.
Overall, Hungary’s commitment to addressing illegal migration and ensuring the security of energy supply has been a central focus during its engagement with Greece, further solidifying partnerships in the region.
