Protecting Minority Languages: Impact of Slovak Language Law Changes

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, has reassured the public that the government is actively working to protect the rights of Hungarian minorities in Slovakia amidst concerns over the proposed amendment to the language law. In a recent statement, Minister Szijjártó emphasized that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant communication with Slovak officials to ensure that the rights of Hungarian minorities are not compromised.
The proposed amendment to the language law in Slovakia, put forth by Slovak Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová, aims to tighten enforcement and increase penalties for violations. However, Minister Szijjártó reiterated that the primary goal of the legislation is to protect the Slovak language from external influences, rather than marginalize minority languages.
The Hungarian government is actively engaged in discussions with Slovak officials and key stakeholders to address any potential concerns related to the proposed amendment. Minister Szijjártó underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration to safeguard the rights of Hungarian minorities in Slovakia.
While concerns have been raised about the potential impact of the amendment on minority languages, Minister Szijjártó is optimistic that through continued engagement and cooperation, any negative consequences can be avoided. The Hungarian government remains committed to protecting the rights of Hungarian minorities in Slovakia and will take all necessary steps to ensure their well-being and linguistic rights are upheld.
