Hungary’s Current Events: May 31st, 2023
Hungary witnessed a series of significant events on 31 May 2023, ranging from the suspension of flights by Wizz Air to a tragedy in Budapest and clash of fans during Europa League final.
Wizz Air, the Hungarian budget airline, announced the suspension of flights due to the lack of profits. The move affected thousands of travellers who had planned to travel within and outside of Hungary. The airline’s decision added to the chaos that the country is already facing due to the pandemic.
In another incident, an unfortunate tragedy struck in Budapest where a building collapsed, killing at least ten people. Five others were injured, and the search for any remaining survivors is ongoing.
Meanwhile, tensions rose during the Europa League final match between Fenerbahçe and Sevilla as fans clashed and destroyed a square in Budapest. Several arrests were made to restore calm in the city, and authorities condemned the hooliganism displayed by the fans.
To add to this, changes to cash withdrawals were also introduced by the Hungarian government. The move came in response to a rise in cybercrime, that saw an increase in cases of fraudulent online transactions.
As Hungary grapples with various challenges on the economic, public safety and health front, it remains to be seen how the country will overcome these issues and move forward.
