Hungary’s Interests Met at Last Week’s EU Summit

Hungary’s National Interests Fulfiled at EU Summit despite Attacks

Following a series of attacks on Hungary before last week’s European Union summit, ruling Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch stated that the decision made at the meeting fulfilled Hungary’s national interests in many ways.

Deutsch explained to MTI in Strasbourg that Hungary’s consistent position concerning the 50 billion euros support for Ukraine led to the summit’s decision not to write a blank check, but rather obliged the Council to hold an annual discussion on the use of support for Ukraine based on the European Commission’s assessment.

Additionally, EU leaders at the summit gave a clear guarantee that the monies due to Hungary, but withheld “mostly unlawfully”, would not end up in Ukraine, according to Deutsch.

Deutsch also condemned the European Parliament for what he described as “political violence and harassment” against Hungary. He criticized the opposition Momentum’s MEP Katalin Cseh for demanding a change in the EU’s basic treaty to eliminate the requirement for unanimity in certain decisions, which he believes could disregard the opinions of average or smaller-sized member states.

The statements made by Deutsch shed light on Hungary’s position and concerns within the European Union, especially regarding financial support for Ukraine and the treatment of Hungary by the European Parliament.
