Kazakhstan’s Key Role in Global Nuclear Security Highlighted at IAEA General Conference
At the 68th regular session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized Kazakhstan’s essential role in global nuclear security. During the opening ceremony of the national pavilion, Grossi praised Kazakhstan’s contributions to the development of peaceful nuclear energy and its commitment to global nuclear safety.
Visiting Kazakhstan’s exhibition focused on peaceful nuclear initiatives, Grossi commended the country’s abundant resources and nuclear safety initiatives, describing them as invaluable for the industry’s advancement. He also acknowledged Kazakhstan’s long-standing cooperation with the IAEA, particularly in hosting the IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank.
Highlighting the upcoming referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, scheduled for October 6, Grossi emphasized the significance of the results for the country’s future energy development. He assured Kazakhstan of the IAEA’s support during this critical period to ensure safety, security, and international confidence.
In a notable proposal, Kazakh Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev suggested hosting the next IAEA International Conference on Research Reactors in Kazakhstan. Satkaliyev cited Kazakhstan’s expertise in nuclear reactor research and the production of radiopharmaceuticals as strong reasons for holding the conference in the country.
