Ilhan Cihaner Withdraws from Candidacy, Criticizes Democratic Process in CHP Congress
In a recent statement, İlhan Cihaner announced his withdrawal from the candidacy in the 38th Congress of the Republican People’s Party (CHP). Cihaner expressed disappointment in the current state of the party and criticized the divisive and unproductive nature of the Congress process.
Addressing the public, party delegates, and CHP members, Cihaner emphasized the importance of considering the party’s past, discussing its future path and power dynamics, and determining its political direction. However, he lamented that instead of meaningful discussions on political approaches and competent staffing, the focus has shifted towards competition for municipal opportunities.
Cihaner also raised concerns about the manipulation of media and the creation of a perception of power during the Congress process. He accused the organizers of turning the Congress into a “political” psychological war between two individuals. He further noted that attempts to exert pressure and limit democratic representation were made by preventing other candidates from fully participating in the process.
The former candidate expressed discontent with the anti-democratic, unpolitical, and personalized nature of the Congress race and firmly stated his refusal to be a part of such a process. However, he expressed gratitude towards those who supported him by signing his nomination papers and offering their support.
Cihaner concluded his statement by expressing hope that the Congress Delegates, who have a history of great struggles, would make the right decision despite the unfavorable democratic conditions. He reiterated his commitment to the Republican People’s Party and the Republic itself, emphasizing a shared dedication to the future.
The withdrawal of İlhan Cihaner from the CHP Congress candidacy sheds light on the challenges and divisions within the party. As the Congress progresses, it remains to be seen how these issues will be addressed and who will emerge as the new leader of the CHP.
