Mineral Fertilizers Imports in Kyrgyzstan
Mineral fertilizers play a crucial role in agriculture, providing essential nutrients for plant growth. In Kyrgyzstan, these fertilizers are mainly imported from neighboring countries such as Uzbekistan, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The Chief Specialist of the Agronomical Chemistry and Supervision Division of the Department of Chemicalization, Protection, and Quarantine of Plants at the Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan, Gulzar Sultanbek kyzy, recently discussed this issue on Birinchi Radio.
According to Sultanbek kyzy, Kyrgyzstan’s annual demand for mineral fertilizers is around 287,000 tons, including 163,500 tons of nitrogen, 105,800 tons of phosphorus, and 17,200 tons of potash fertilizers. Due to the lack of local production facilities, Kyrgyzstan relies entirely on imports to meet this demand.
In 2017, the Kyrgyz Republic signed an agreement with Uzbekistan for the uninterrupted supply of mineral fertilizers. Uzbekistan provides an annual quota of 100,000 tons, with 60,000 tons earmarked for spring field work. Additionally, a portion of the country’s fertilizer needs is met by imports from Russia (15%) and Kazakhstan (5%).
Domestic private suppliers in Kyrgyzstan are responsible for importing fertilizers, operating their own infrastructure and warehouses. These suppliers ensure timely deliveries based on demand and market conditions.
It is essential to note that Kyrgyzstan recently implemented a 6-month ban on the export of mineral fertilizers outside the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) starting from March 3, 2025. This measure aims to secure domestic fertilizer supplies and support the country’s agricultural sector.
