Improved Car-Sharing Access in Budapest with Ample Parking Spaces

Budapest Considers Reallocating Parking Spaces to Car-Sharing Companies
In an effort to address the challenges faced by car-sharing drivers in Budapest, the local governments of the city and its districts are considering reallocating parking spaces from drivers and residents to car-sharing companies. This adjustment comes as a response to the significant amount of time car-sharing drivers spend searching for available parking, which ultimately increases ride costs and extends the duration of the actual journey.
According to reports from telex.hu, the proposed parliamentary bill aims to permit car-sharing companies to acquire parking spaces in downtown pay zones and even use parking spaces designated exclusively for local residents. The bill also seeks to extend the discounts currently offered by local governments to local drivers and empower local governments to allocate parking spaces to car-sharing companies, although specifics such as the number or size of these spaces have not been outlined.
Currently, three service companies operate in Budapest: Wigo (Share Now), Mol Limo, and Greengo. The content of the bill aligns with the practices in several Western European cities, such as Bremen, Dresden, Berlin, and Hamburg, where parking spaces are allocated for car-sharing companies to promote their use.
However, reassigning residential parking spaces to car-sharing companies is likely to provoke public outcry, especially with elections approaching next June. Several districts in Budapest have already prohibited car-sharing cars from areas designated for locals, further complicating the issue.
Despite the potential conflicts, car-sharing has the capacity to substitute thousands of individual rides in the Hungarian capital, as one shared vehicle can replace 7-10 private cars in traffic. Additionally, car-sharing is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, with many cars being electric, aligning with the interests of the capital and its residents.
While car-sharing parking spaces currently exist in Budapest, they are primarily located under office buildings and in garages. The proposed bill aims to establish parking lots similar to the popular MOL Bubi bikes to further facilitate car-sharing in the city.
It is important to note that the current bill seeks to curtail several regulatory powers of local governments, which may lead to further conflicts between local governments and the central government. However, car-sharing companies are likely to welcome the prospect of utilizing residential parking spaces in the downtown area.
As the discussions surrounding the bill continue, the outcome will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of car-sharing in Budapest and the willingness of residents to embrace this alternative transportation model.
