Zorlu Töre Makes Important Statements About Presidential Elections and Health Issues

President of the Assembly of the Republic, Zorlu Töre, recently made significant statements regarding the parliamentary presidential elections and the events surrounding this process. Töre revealed that after four rounds of votes in the presidential elections that commenced on October 7, 2024, a new candidate was nominated before the fifth round, leading the process in a different direction.

It was mentioned by Töre that the parliament did not achieve a sufficient majority in the initial four rounds of voting, leading to some legal debates about the election outcome. Following the fifth round of voting on October 10, 2024, due to an error in the vote count, Töre raised objections to the results and brought the matter to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office expressed the opinion that the election result should be determined by the Assembly of the Republic within the constitutional framework.

During the election process, Töre experienced high blood pressure and stress, resulting in hospital treatment. However, he returned to the parliament to ensure the constitutional process continued without interruption. Töre also highlighted previous heart surgery and how the election process took a physical toll on his health.

Regarding the legal process and objections, Töre stated that the candidate with the most votes in the fifth round should be elected as the parliament speaker, without requiring an absolute majority. Despite this opinion, Töre respected his party’s decision to proceed with a new candidate for the presidential elections.

Reflecting on his term of office, Töre noted the accomplishments made during his presidency, including cooperation protocols with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus becoming an observer member of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkish States (TURKPA). He also emphasized the improvement of friendly relations with British and Azerbaijani parliamentarians, representing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus effectively.

In a farewell message, Töre expressed gratitude to the MPs, parliamentary staff, and family for their support during his presidency. He pledged to continue serving the people on various platforms and acknowledged the will of his constituents as the Nicosia MP of the National Unity Party. Töre conveyed optimism about the parliament’s future work and emphasized the importance of conducting processes discreetly, committing to working for the people in the upcoming period.
