Inauguration of Monument Commemorating Hungarians Deported to Soviet Labour Camps – See the Photos

A monument honoring the memory of Hungarians deported to forced labor camps in the Soviet Union after World War II was recently unveiled in Vallaj, located in eastern Hungary.

State Secretary Miklós Soltész, responsible for church and ethnic minority relations, highlighted the significance of the monument, recalling the nearly 500 individuals from Vallaj and neighboring Merk who were deported 80 years ago. These individuals were among the 5,000 Sathmar Swabians deported due to their German heritage or language.

In total, around 300,000 Hungarians were deported to forced labor camps in the Soviet Union during that period.

The inauguration of the monument serves as a poignant reminder of this dark chapter in Hungarian history and pays tribute to those who suffered in the labor camps.
