Incorporation of Symbol of Som into Microsoft Windows OS
Kyrgyz Som Symbol Added to Unicode Standard
The official currency symbol of the Kyrgyz Republic, the som, has been officially included in the Unicode standard by the International Organization for Standardization. This milestone was announced by the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan.
This means that the graphic symbol of the Kyrgyz som is now available in the Microsoft Windows operating system, starting from Windows 11 onwards. This includes Microsoft Office and all other standard Microsoft products that come with the operating system, as well as any additional software installed on Windows 11.
To display the Kyrgyz som symbol on the screen, users will need to select the Kyrgyz language in the language panel settings and use the keyboard combination “right Alt+9”.
The introduction of the som symbol into the Unicode standard comes after its initial creation in 2017. Since then, efforts have been made to ensure its inclusion in the standard to make it more accessible to users.
This development is a significant step towards promoting the visibility and recognition of the Kyrgyz currency symbol on a global scale. It will also make it easier for users and businesses to accurately represent the Kyrgyz som in digital communications and transactions.
