Increase in Pesticide-Related Deaths in Ankara with 5 New Detentions

The number of detentions related to a tragic incident involving pesticides in Ankara has now risen to five. The poisoning incident occurred in an apartment in the Keçiören district, resulting in the loss of two lives.

Security, health, and AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) teams have been diligently working on the investigation and response to the insecticide poisoning incident. Yesterday, two individuals lost their lives, and ten others were affected, with one person in critical condition. Today, AFAD’s CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) teams conducted measurements using specialized devices to assess the poison levels in the fully evacuated apartment. After completing their task, the teams, equipped with protective clothing, exited the area.

Due to the high concentration of chemicals in the apartment, the measurement work is expected to continue for some time. The Ministry of Health’s National Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE) and the police are also present in the region to address any potential health risks faced by the CBRN teams.

The number of individuals detained in connection with this tragic incident has increased from two to five.

Meanwhile, fire teams have been called upon to rescue a bird found in a cage on the top floor of the affected apartment. Firefighters used a ladder from a fire truck to reach the floor and assist. However, during the intervention, the bird managed to escape through an open terrace window.

The incident began on June 16, 2023, when health teams responded to a family residing in an apartment in the Keçiören district. The family reported symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Sadly, two lives were lost, and ten individuals, one of whom was in a severe condition, received medical treatment after the combined efforts of the police, AFAD, UMKE, SAKOM, and GAMER teams.
