Incumbent Mayors Secure Re-Election in Israel’s Major Cities
Ultra-Orthodox Win in Israeli Local Elections Despite Low Turnout
In the recent local elections held in Israel on February 27, the Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jewish lists have shown their dominance, despite low participation rates. The elections took place amidst Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza and conflicts on the northern border with Lebanon.
Neighborhoods with a high population of Haredim saw the highest election participation rates, with the city of Bnei Brak leading with a 66 percent turnout. In Jerusalem, the Ultra-Orthodox secured 17 out of 30 seats in the Municipal Council, ensuring the re-election of Mayor Moshe Lion for another five years. The far-right list also gained 3 seats in the city, prompting speculations about potential changes in policies.
In Tel Aviv, Mayor Ron Huldai is set to retain his position for another term, maintaining stability in Israel’s most liberal city. However, in Haifa, a second round of elections will be held for the Mayor as the top two candidates could not surpass the 40 percent threshold.
The coastal city of Holon will see a new Mayor, Shai Kenan, who received 43 percent of the votes with the support of opposition parties. Similarly, Yossi Dagan retained his position as President of the Samaria Regional Council.
Throughout Israel, Haredim managed to secure more seats in municipal councils in densely populated cities by mobilizing their voters effectively.
The elections took place with a low turnout of 49 percent, amidst Israel’s continuous attacks on Gaza and the risk of conflict with Lebanon. A significant number of votes were cast by mail and by Israeli soldiers stationed in various sensitive areas, delaying the announcement of final results.
