Innovation Strategy: A New Program for Science and Technology

Hungary has launched a new strategic program called the John von Neumann Program for Science and Innovation, aiming to put the country among the top ten innovators in Europe by 2030. According to Balázs Hankó, State Secretary for Innovation and Higher Education of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, this program requires innovation, Hungarian creativity and vision, and more research and development staff. In recent years, Hungary has made significant progress in research; however, the government aims to create a knowledge-based economy with strong domestic added value. This will require doubling the number of patents by 2030, increasing the number of researchers and developers to 9,000 by 2030, and making the country an attractive destination for foreign innovators. The program is named after John von Neumann, born 120 years ago, who was a mathematical genius and part of the “battle group” alongside other Martians—Ede Teller, Leó Szilárd and Tódor Kármán—in America.
