Inspector’s Report: Midibus Accident with 5 Fatalities and 26 Working Brake Stops.
Five people have died and 39 others were wounded after a passenger midibus crashed into a house in the Dörtyol neighborhood of Akçaabat on May 4. The midibus is owned by the Metropolitan Municipality and driven by Adem Bayraktar, who lost control of the vehicle on a downhill slope. Upon investigation, police found that the brake system had worked at 26 stops, but the emergency braking system was not activated before the accident occurred. Bayraktar, who said that he did not brake and his speed increased due to the downhill slope, was arrested for negligence leading to death.
Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Murat Difficulty expressed his condolences, saying that the municipality would do its part in taking the necessary measures if there were institutional negligence or fault. The municipality has appointed two inspectors to conduct an administrative investigation and are examining the midibus’ recorded sketch and speed indicators. The cause of the accident will be revealed after a comprehensive investigation.
