Integration of ICGB with Trans-Balkan Gas Pipeline Enables Reverse Gas Supplies to Moldova and Ukraine

IGB Capacity Expansion Key for Pan-European Energy Security
Teodora Georgieva, executive officer at ICGB, emphasized the importance of expanding the capacity of the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) not only for national energy security but also for pan-European energy security in the long term.
In an interview with Report, Georgieva highlighted that IGB is a crucial element of the Southern Gas Corridor and plays a significant role in the integration with the Vertical Gas Corridor.
She noted, “IGB physically connects the Southern Gas Corridor with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the Vertical Corridor system, making it a strategic link for transporting Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region to Southeastern, Central, and Eastern Europe. Additionally, IGB facilitates gas supplies from Ukraine and Moldova through the Trans-Balkan pipeline. The integration with the Bulgarian national gas network and the Trans-Balkan route allows for the reverse flow of Azerbaijani gas towards Ukraine and Moldova, ensuring alternative and secure supply routes.”
Georgieva emphasized the synergy between the Southern Gas Corridor, IGB, and the Trans-Balkan direction, highlighting that these connections form a strategic lifeline for a region facing significant geopolitical and energy challenges.
She further stated, “ICGB is committed to providing reliable, flexible, and scalable supplies. With sustainable market demand and operational success, IGB has already reached 80% utilization of its capacity since commencing operations in 2022, demonstrating the high level of market confidence in our infrastructure.”
The expansion of IGB’s capacity is essential for enhancing energy security in Europe and ensuring the efficient transportation of gas across the continent. The strategic importance of IGB in connecting key gas networks underscores the critical role it plays in strengthening energy diversification and security in the region.
