Interior Ministry suggests stricter penalties for inciting power seizure
Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan proposes amendments to Criminal Code
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan is pushing for amendments to the Criminal Code, the Civil Procedure Code, and the law on combating extremist activity. The proposed changes aim to strengthen criminal punishment for extremist activity and calls for the seizure of power.
According to the ministry’s proposal, producing, distributing, transporting, or forwarding extremist materials, as well as acquiring or storing them for distribution purposes, and using symbols or attributes of extremist organizations through media or the Internet could result in imprisonment for 5 to 7 years, with or without deprivation of certain rights for up to three years.
Actions performed by a group of individuals with financial or material support from foreign organizations or citizens, using their official position, or during public events may face imprisonment from 7 to 10 years, with or without deprivation of specific rights for up to three years.
The proposed amendments also introduce new articles to the current legislation, including the punishment of storing extremist materials after receiving a warning, and public calls for extremist activity through the Internet or media, punishable by imprisonment for three to five years.
These proposed changes are open for public discussion, as the Ministry of Internal Affairs seeks to address and combat extremist activities more effectively in Kyrgyzstan.
