During a recent visit to China, Advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, General Rahim Safavi, put forward a proposal to the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to establish a “non-aggression pact.” This news was reported by the Fars news agency.
Calling for joint security and long-lasting peace among member countries, General Rahim Safavi suggested that the SCO nations consider adopting a non-aggression pact. This agreement would serve as a model for promoting peace within the organization.
The SCO is a regional international association consisting of nine member countries, namely Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
In terms of security cooperation, the SCO member nations regularly conduct joint anti-terrorist exercises, with the largest exercise being the “Peace Mission,” which has been held since 2003.
Iran officially became the ninth member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on July 4, 2023. The country had been an SCO observer since 2005.
The proposal put forward by General Rahim Safavi highlights the commitment of Iran to enhancing regional stability and peaceful relations among SCO member states. This non-aggression pact, if adopted, could potentially strengthen cooperation and security within the organization.
The SCO countries will now consider the proposal and assess its feasibility in realizing the shared objective of promoting peace and security in the region.
