“Iranian Women Speak: Art, Resistance and History” – Special Episode from 26th Flying Broom Film Festival

The 26th Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival will feature a special selection of films in solidarity with the freedom struggle that began last year after Mahsa Emini’s tragic death. Iranian Women Speak: History, Art, Resistance is one such section, including experimental and documentary films shot by women and non-binary filmmakers from 1979 to the present. The festival, in partnership with Cinematek/Cinemaevi and Another Gaze / Another Screen, aims to highlight the feminist resistance evident in the uprising initiated by women in Iran, drawing attention to their impact.

As part of the festival, Mania Akbari, an Iranian director, artist, writer and actor, will present her 2022 production How Dare You Want This? / How Dare You Have Such a Rubbish Wish, which explores the exploitation and objectification of women in Iranian cinema history. This film will be accompanied by a themed talk and the screening of Akbari’s short film Maryam Tafakory’s Iranian Bag / Irani Bag.

Other notable films to be featured include the autobiographical documentary Radiograph of a Family by Iranian documentary filmmaker Firouzeh Khosrovani, The Silent Majority Speaks, directed by Bani Khoshnoudi, and Iranian Women’s Liberation Movement: Milat / Le mouvement de libération des femmes iraniennes: année zéro, directed by Sylvina Boissonnas and Claudine Mulard. Additionally, Shorts from Iran: “Intergenerational Transfers” will showcase a selection of experimental and documentary films exploring intergenerational interaction.

The festival will run from May 31st to June 7th and is sure to captivate audiences with a diverse selection of bold and powerful films highlighting Iranian women’s struggle for equality and freedom.
