Israel airstrikes kill 18 in Palestinian tent area
Israeli tanks launched an attack on the Al-Mavasi region in the west of Rafah, targeting the tents of Palestinians with artillery shells. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that 18 people lost their lives and 35 others were injured in the initial findings of the attack. Many of the injured individuals were promptly treated, as eyewitnesses recounted the destruction caused by the Israeli army tanks.
Rafah Mayor Sufi expressed his concerns, stating that the city has transformed into an Israeli military operation zone. He mentioned the destruction of houses and residences in various parts of the city, leading to a humanitarian crisis due to the military operation, blockades, and lack of food supplies entering the area. Sufi highlighted the absence of healthcare facilities in Rafah, warning of deteriorating health and humanitarian conditions.
Furthermore, the ongoing attacks in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, including children and women, with tens of thousands sustaining injuries. The targeting of civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals and schools where people sought refuge, has exacerbated the situation in the region.
In addition, there is a growing risk of epidemic diseases in Gaza and nearby areas, as waste buildup and contaminated water increase the likelihood of outbreaks. Hospital Director Husam Abu Safiye emphasized the need for international intervention to pressure Israel to allow the entry of humanitarian aid and save lives in the region.
With only 17 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza able to provide limited services, the healthcare system is under immense strain. The lack of a functioning hospital in Rafah further complicates the situation, highlighting the urgent need for assistance and support to mitigate the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
