IVECO Supports Uzbekistan’s Efforts to Combat Desertification of the Aral Sea

In March 2024, IVECO launched a project aimed at mitigating the effects of toxic salts and sand spreading due to the desertification of the Aral Sea area. The company planted 10,000 Saxaul tree seedlings, a species native to western Uzbekistan known for its ability to thrive in harsh conditions and high-salinity soil. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan and the Research Institute of Environmental and Nature Protection Technologies, covers an area of 10 hectares, equivalent to almost 15 football pitches.
The Aral Sea has experienced a drastic reduction in size over the past 50 years, losing 85-90% of its volume. This has led to the disappearance of wetland ecosystems and the exposure of extensive areas covered with salt and toxic chemicals. The spread of toxic salts and sand from the seabed poses significant health risks to the local population, resulting in higher rates of diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis.
