Japan and Turkey Interested in Developing Toll Roads in Uzbekistan

Two leading companies from Japan and Turkey have expressed interest in participating in public-private partnership projects in Uzbekistan’s transportation sector.

Sojitz and Rönesans have both shown keen interest in taking part in projects based on PPP (public-private partnerships) in the transportation sector. The Deputy Minister of Transport in Uzbekistan, Jasurbek Choriev, recently met with Yasuhide Machida, the General Manager of the European branch of Sojitz, and Cem Özoğuz, the Chairman of the Board of Rönesans on May 1 to discuss potential collaboration.

The meeting primarily focused on cooperation in implementing public-private partnership projects in the transportation sector, with a particular emphasis on constructing toll roads in Uzbekistan. The foreign company representatives were briefed on the planned projects under PPP in the transport and road management sectors in Uzbekistan.

One notable project highlighted during the discussions was the construction of the Tashkent-Samarkand toll road, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has provided a grant of $350 thousand for the technical and economic justification of this project.

With the interest and involvement of companies like Sojitz and Rönesans, the future of public-private partnership projects in Uzbekistan’s transportation sector looks promising.
