Japan Mourns the Death of the Oldest Person on Earth

Tomiko Itooka, the World’s Oldest Living Person, Passes Away at 116
Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman who held the title of the world’s oldest living person according to the Guinness World Records, passed away on December 29th at the age of 116. The announcement was made by a representative of the city of Ashiya in Hyogo Prefecture on Saturday, revealing that a private funeral was held with close family members.
Ms. Itooka’s remarkable age was verified by the Gerontology Research Group, and it was reported that she died of natural causes in the nursing home where she had spent her final years. Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, she played a significant role during World War II by managing the office of her husband’s textile factory, which was located in what is now South Korea. She is survived by a son, a daughter, and five grandchildren.
After the passing of 117-year-old Maria Branyas of Spain in August of last year, Tomiko Itooka inherited the title of the world’s oldest living person. The current holder of this title is now Brazilian nun Ina Canabarro Lucas, who is just 16 days younger than the late Ms. Itooka.
Our sincere condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Tomiko Itooka, a woman whose long life and legacy will be remembered for years to come.
