JAXA’s “Moon Sniper” Successfully Enters Lunar Orbit

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has announced that its “Smart Landing Vehicle for Lunar Exploration” (SLIM), also known as “Moon Sniper”, has successfully entered the lunar orbit. The agency provided an update on the space travel information of the SLIM vehicle in a recent statement.

According to the statement, the orbital change occurred as planned and there were no unusual conditions detected in the probe. JAXA confirmed that the descent of the lander towards the Moon is expected to begin on January 20.

The SLIM vehicle was sent into space from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima at the end of September, carried by the H2A rocket. JAXA had previously announced that the SLIM vehicle was expected to achieve an “unprecedentedly high-precision landing” on the Moon.

Manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric, the lander weighs 700 kilograms, with a height of 2.4 meters and a width of 2.7 meters. It is equipped with a sphere-shaped probe, slightly larger than a tennis ball, that will allow it to move on the Moon’s surface.

The observations and data collected by SLIM on the Moon will be utilized in the “Artemis” project led by the United States. This collaboration demonstrates the international cooperation in space exploration and the sharing of scientific knowledge.
