Joint Project: PETRONAS and Turkmengaz to Provide Water Supply for Seaside Villages

PETRONAS Charigali, Turkmengaz Jointly Lay Water Pipeline in Balkan Region

A ceremony was held today, January 31, in the early morning on the coast of the Caspian Sea, in the Turkmenbashi district of the Balkan region, to lay a water pipeline that will supply clean drinking water to the villages of Guvlymayak and Kiyanly. This joint social project of the PETRONAS Charigali company and the state concern Turkmengaz is designed to significantly improve the water supply to the local population.

The ceremony, which took place near the seawater desalination plant, was attended by representatives of PETRONAS Charigali, headed by Vice President for International Assets Mark Fitzgerald, the Turkmengaz concern, the administration of the Turkmenbashi district, the management of the Turkmenbashiagyzsuv enterprise and the villages of Guvlymayak and Kiyanly, along with honorary elders of the local community.

The project aims to construct a 7-kilometer water pipeline from the existing desalination plant to residential villages as part of the Water for Life Project. Historically, residents used trucked water for water supply needs, which was inconvenient and affected the budget of homeowners. The new pipeline will eliminate this problem and provide clean drinking water to every house in the villages.

The design capacity of the water supply system of 65 m3/hr will meet the needs of all segments of the population and also make it possible to increase the growth of private households and significantly improve the quality of life. The Water for Life Project itself includes the construction of a pumping station at the seawater desalination plant, a main water pipeline, and tanks in both villages, as well as an extensive water supply system.

All social initiatives of the Company are carried out in accordance with the purposes and objectives of the Turkmenistan Government with regards to the improvement of living conditions, education, and healthcare. PETRONAS has committed to continue supporting the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, with the Water for Life Project being just one of the CSR initiatives.

After the joint construction work was initiated, the national dance Kusht Depdi delighted the audience and left pleasant memories of the event. The participants then moved to School No.7 of Kiyanly village, which was renovated by the company together with the State Concern Turkmengaz in 2023. In commemoration of the visit to Turkmenistan, the delegation of PETRONAS planted tree seedlings as a sign of respect and long-term partnership.

The ceremony marks a milestone in ensuring access to clean drinking water for the local communities and demonstrates the commitment of PETRONAS Charigali and the state concern Turkmengaz to improving the quality of life in the region.
