Journalist Fatih Altaylı Released with Travel Ban and Judicial Control Order
Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office summoned Journalist Fatih Altaylı to testify as a suspect on charges of “praising the crime and the criminal” and “publicly inciting and humiliating a segment of the public to hatred and hostility” in some of his social media posts. Altaylı went to the prosecutor’s office this morning and gave a statement. He was accompanied by Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör, who came to support him.
After giving a statement that lasted approximately one hour, Fatih Altaylı was referred to the Criminal Judgeship of Peace on Duty. The prosecutors requested judicial control in the form of a travel ban and a signature requirement. The judgeship decided to release Fatih Altaylı with a ban on leaving the country and a judicial control order in the form of signing.
This decision comes after a series of social media posts that landed Altaylı in hot water with the authorities. Despite the judicial control order and travel ban, Altaylı has been allowed to continue with his journalistic work within the country.
The case has brought attention to issues of freedom of expression and the role of journalists in society. It has sparked a debate about the boundaries of free speech and the responsibility of individuals in positions of influence.
As the story continues to develop, it remains to be seen how it will impact the media landscape and the ongoing debate about freedom of speech in Turkey.
