Journalist Mehmet Barlas Dies Suddenly – Latest News from Turkey

Renowned journalist Mehmet Barlas passed away on July 18, 2021, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in Turkish journalism. Born in Ankara in 1942, Barlas began his journalism career while still a student, working for his father’s paper Son Havadis. He later became a professional journalist, working for prestigious newspapers such as Cumhuriyet, Milliyet, Sabah, and Zaman.
Barlas was also a prolific author, having written several books including “The Period of Coups and Fights in Turkey,” “Memoirs of Turgut Özal,” and “Negotiations on Turkey.” He was also a news commentator at TGRT and served as the main news presenter at ATV for a short time.
In addition to his journalism work, Barlas was a member of the Board of Trustees of Okan University and had turned down a ministry offer he received on the grounds that he was a journalist, not a politician.

His passing is a great loss to Turkish journalism, and his contributions to the field will always be remembered.
