Kazakh Athletes Secure Seven Medals at Paris Olympics
The 2024 Paris Olympics concluded on Aug. 11 with the traditional closing ceremony, marking the end of an exciting event filled with remarkable achievements and memorable moments. As Paris bid farewell to the games, they handed over the Olympic flag to Los Angeles, the host city for the 2028 Olympics.
Kazakhstan’s Olympic team put on a commendable performance, securing a total of seven medals – one gold, three silver, and three bronze. The Kazakh Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported that the country finished in 43rd place in the overall medal standings.
The first day of competition proved to be historic for Kazakhstan, as Olympic debutants Islam Satpayev and Alexandra Le clinched bronze in the 10-meter mixed team air rifle event, marking the nation’s first Olympic medal in shooting since 1996.
Yeldos Smetov, a seasoned Kazakh judoka, made history by becoming the first Olympic champion in judo from Kazakhstan. Smetov claimed the gold medal in the men’s final in the 60-kilogram weight category, adding to his impressive collection of Olympic medals, which includes a silver from the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Other notable achievements for Kazakhstan at the 2024 Paris Olympics include Gusman Kyrgyzbayev’s bronze in the 66-kilogram weight class in judo, Nariman Kurbanov’s silver in the men’s pommel horse final in artistic gymnastics, Nazym Kyzaibay’s bronze in boxing, Nurbek Oralbay’s silver in boxing, and Demeu Zhadrayev’s silver in Greco-Roman wrestling.
In total, eighty athletes, including 54 debutants, proudly represented Kazakhstan across 25 different sports at the 2024 Paris Games. The nation’s performance was met with pride and joy, as they celebrated their achievements on the global stage.
