ASTANA – Alimzhan Ayapov, a chess player from Karagandy, achieved first place at the 23rd World Individual Chess Championship organized by the International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) in Gyumri, Armenia. The tournament took place from July 19 to July 28.

Ayapov showcased his exceptional skills by winning in two categories simultaneously – adult and youth (20 years and younger). The press service of the Karagandy Region Department of Physical Culture and Sports announced this remarkable achievement on July 29.

Representing the Kazakhstan national team, Master of Sports Ayapov demonstrated his expertise by scoring seven points out of nine possible (with six wins, two draws, and one loss). His coach, Viktor Maksimenko, expressed pride in Ayapov’s success, stating, “Alimzhan was awarded two gold medals. This is the first achievement of this level among athletes with disabilities in the chess history of Kazakhstan.”

The competition brought together 52 athletes from 13 chess federations across the globe. Ayapov’s triumph signifies a historic moment for Kazakhstan’s chess community and highlights the talent and dedication of disabled athletes in the sport.
