President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan received detailed briefings on March 28 from Zhambyl Region Akim (governor) Yerbol Karashukeyev and Minister of Emergency Situations Chingis Arinov regarding the consequences of the earthquake that struck the region earlier that day, according to a statement from Akorda.

The government is actively monitoring the situation, with Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov tasked with ensuring the prompt delivery of aid and overseeing the swift restoration of damaged residential buildings and critical social infrastructure.

The earthquake, measuring 5 on the Richter scale, hit the border area between Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic on March 28 at 03:42 a.m. Astana time. The epicenter was located in Kazakhstan, approximately 323 kilometers southwest of Almaty.

The tremors were felt in various areas, including Zhambyl Region, with varying intensities. The intensity in Taraz and Shu was two points, while in Merke and Kulan villages, it reached five and four points, respectively.

Aftershocks were felt in the Kyrgyz Republic, with a magnitude of 5.5 points in Bishkek. These tremors caused weak shaking of walls and furniture in multi-story buildings.

Later in the day, a second earthquake originating in the Kyrgyz Republic was registered at 4 p.m. Astana time. While the exact intensity is still being assessed, there have been no casualties or further damage reported so far.

Following the earthquake, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported structural cracks in 11 social facilities and 12 residential buildings in Merke and Turar Ryskulov districts. No casualties have been reported, but authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage.

An operational headquarters has been set up, and a public hotline has been launched to handle inquiries. A government-led working group, led by the deputy minister, has been sent to the region to assess the situation, support local authorities, and evaluate the damage.

Prime Minister Bektenov has stressed the importance of monitoring critical infrastructure, including social facilities, roads, and life support systems. The government is committed to ensuring the swift recovery and support for those affected by the earthquake in the Zhambyl Region.
