Kazakh President Appoints New Commissioners for Children’s Rights and Vulnerable Groups

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of Kazakhstan, has appointed Svetlana Zhakupova as the Ombudsperson for the Rights of Socially Vulnerable Categories of the Population. The appointment was made official on June 12th. Zhakupova has previously held various positions at Kazakh schools, state institutions, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, and the Ministry of Healthcare. The ombudsperson position for socially vulnerable categories of the population is a new position created by President Tokayev. The person occupying this position will carry out activities voluntarily to ensure the rights and protect the legitimate interests of the socially vulnerable population and restore their rights and freedoms in cooperation with state and public institutions.

On the same day, Tokayev also dismissed Aruzhan Sain as the Ombudsperson for Children’s Rights and appointed Dinara Zakiyeva instead. Zakiyeva has previously worked at the Presidential Administration, Amanat party, Astana orphanages, and Mazhilis, the lower chamber of the Kazakh Parliament. The main goal of the ombudsperson is to protect the rights and legitimate interests of children and restore their rights and freedoms in cooperation with state and public institutions.
