ASTANA — Kazakh school students proudly brought home four bronze medals from the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held in the capital from July 7 to 14.

The competition saw the participation of 305 young biologists and 275 scientists from 81 countries. During the event, participants engaged in two theoretical and four practical rounds covering various topics such as biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, anatomy, and animal physiology, as reported by the Kazakh Ministry of Education’s press service on July 13.

Following the conclusion of IBO 2024, the international committee’s inspectors and jury commended the organization of the event, highlighting the quality and relevance of the tasks devised by the young Kazakh scientists.

In a statement addressed to young biologists worldwide, Kazakh Minister of Education Gani Beisembayev expressed appreciation to all participants and the international organizing committee for their contributions. He underscored the significance of such events in advancing the field of education.

“IBO 2024 serves not only as a platform for knowledge competition but also as a crucial international gathering that fosters camaraderie and collaboration among countries in the realm of science. I trust that your time spent in Kazakhstan has left a lasting impression and inspired you to pursue future scientific endeavors. Congratulations to the winners! I have full confidence that you will continue to make remarkable scientific discoveries and uphold the legacy of the world’s renowned scientists,” Beisembayev remarked.

Apart from the competition, participants and guests enjoyed exploring the sights of Astana and the cultural richness of the World of Nomads ethno-village in Burabay, offering them insights into the lifestyle and heritage of the Kazakh people.

IBO ranks among the top seven international competitions for schoolchildren. Over the past 28 years, students from Kazakhstan have consistently distinguished themselves at the event, clinching more than 70 awards.

The success of Kazakh school students at the International Biology Olympiad underscores the nation’s commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering excellence in the field of science.
