Kazakhstan and EU Strengthen Agricultural Relations

Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov and European Union (EU) Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski recently met to discuss expanding cooperation in the agri-food sector. The meeting, held on May 29, highlighted the potential for increased collaboration in elevating quality standards for agricultural products, supporting farmers, and implementing advanced agricultural technologies.

Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening interaction to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector. Prime Minister Bektenov expressed Kazakhstan’s capacity to produce high-quality organic agricultural products, noting the growing demand from Europe. He stressed the need to intensify efforts to expand the range of goods exported by Kazakhstan to the European market.

Commissioner Wojciechowski praised the favorable conditions for investors in Kazakhstan and confirmed the EU’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. Additional talks were held with Kazakh Minister of Agriculture Aidarbek Saparov during the Interfood Astana International Exhibition, where the focus was on eliminating trade barriers and expanding market access for key products such as meat, honey, and dairy products.

In 2023, Kazakhstan exported significant quantities of wheat, flax seeds, and rapeseeds to EU countries, with plans to further increase exports through the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. The country also saw a notable export of fish products, with a large portion going to EU nations like Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, and the Netherlands.

EU countries play a significant role in Kazakhstan’s foreign trade, accounting for over 40% of attracted investments and nearly 30% of total trade volume. The steady growth in trade relations between Kazakhstan and the EU underscores the mutual benefits of closer cooperation in the agri-food sector. As both sides work towards resolving technical barriers and expanding market opportunities, the future looks promising for enhanced economic ties and agricultural collaboration.
