Kazakhstan and South Korea Strengthen Energy Collaboration
South Korean companies and government agencies express support for Kazakhstan’s nuclear power plant project
South Korea’s major energy companies and government agencies have congratulated Kazakhstan on the successful holding of the recent referendum and have expressed their readiness to provide support in building a nuclear power plant (NPP). This announcement came during a meeting with a Kazakh delegation led by Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev during his official visit to South Korea from October 22-25.
The Energy Minister discussed the potential participation of South Korean companies in an international consortium that is being considered for the construction of the NPP. The final decision on this matter is expected to be made in 2025. Satkaliyev held talks with prominent South Korean firms, including Doosan Enerbility, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC), and Samsung C&T.
During the visit, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Doosan Enerbility to localize the production of energy equipment, train local personnel, and establish a representative office in Astana. Currently, Kazakhstan is collaborating with Doosan Enerbility on a project to build a 1,000-megawatt combined cycle power plant in the Turkistan Region, as well as conducting a technical survey to enhance energy complex efficiency and sustainability.
The discussions also explored potential partnerships in oil, gas, and renewable energy projects between Kazakhstan and South Korea. This cooperation underscores the growing ties between the two countries in the energy sector and paves the way for innovative and sustainable energy solutions in Kazakhstan.
