Kazakhstan and UNDP Launch New Initiative to Aid Most Vulnerable Communities
UNDP and Kazakhstan Present Digital Family Card Initiative to Support Vulnerable Populations
ASTANA – The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Kazakhstan and the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the United Nations (UN) have introduced a flagship initiative aimed at providing state support to the most vulnerable population groups. The Kazakh Ministry of National Economy’s press service reported on July 18 that the Digital Family Card initiative was presented during a high-level event at the UN headquarters in New York.
The Digital Family Card is a groundbreaking government technology that focuses on addressing inequalities through a comprehensive approach involving different government agencies. It aims to efficiently deliver services and enhance coordination between these agencies. Ivana Živković, UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Assistant Administrator, praised the initiative, stating that it exemplifies the fusion of technology, partnership, and visionary leadership. She emphasized that the Digital Family Card brings transformative changes in the lives of numerous people in need and is a significant step towards inclusive development and social progress.
Building inclusive digital public infrastructure can contribute to progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reduce inequalities, and inspire public trust in state institutions, according to Živković. She highlighted that UNDP supports governments worldwide in benefiting from the transformative power of digitization, including the government of Kazakhstan.
During the event, participants had the opportunity to experience virtual reality (VR) presentations showcasing specific support cases to understand how the Digital Family Card functions. The event emphasized the strategic partnership between UNDP and Kazakhstan, which focuses on addressing inequalities, modernizing institutions, and promoting low-carbon growth.
Minister of National Economy Alibek Kuantyrov expressed Kazakhstan’s interest in further strengthening its alliance with UNDP. He specifically mentioned the implementation of the UNDP Country Program for 2021-2025, which aims to address inequality, improve public administration, achieve the SDGs, and combat climate change and natural disasters. Kuantyrov stated that UNDP has already implemented over 200 projects in Kazakhstan, with a total value exceeding $200 million. He highlighted the importance of the allocated funds in supporting the green sectors of the economy and implementing institutional reforms in Kazakhstan.
The partnership between UNDP and Kazakhstan continues to play a crucial role in supporting the country’s development efforts. The Digital Family Card initiative is expected to make a significant impact on reducing inequalities and improving the lives of vulnerable populations in Kazakhstan.
