Kazakhstan Denies Extradition of Kyrgyz Citizen to Russia
Kazakhstan Authorities Refuse to Extradite Kyrgyz Citizen Detained at Russia’s Request
The authorities of Kazakhstan have made a decision to not extradite Alina Gorshenina, a citizen of Kyrgyzstan who was detained in June at the request of Russia. The Insider reported that the Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office denied the extradition request from the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office on August 8. Subsequently, the court ordered her release from custody.
Alina Gorshenina was detained on June 1 at the border while attempting to enter Kazakhstan from Kyrgyzstan. She is facing a criminal case in Russia under Article 296 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation related to threats or violence in connection with the administration of justice or the holding of a preliminary investigation. Russian authorities allege that in 2023, Gorshenina used a Russian SIM card to send threats to Moscow Regional Court judge Elena Morozova and prosecutor Elena Koloskova, who were involved in the arrest of Alexei Navalny in January 2021.
In July, a court in Kazakhstan had placed Alina Gorshenina in custody pending the consideration of the extradition request. However, with the recent decision not to extradite her, she has been released from custody.
Additionally, in a separate case, a court in Almaty also released Natalya Narskaya, a resident of Lyubertsy, who was accused of extremism in Russia, from a pretrial detention center. The decision to release both individuals comes amid heightened tensions and legal disputes between the two neighboring countries.
