Astana to Host 35th International Biology Olympiad with Participation from 80 Countries
Astana is gearing up to host the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) from July 7-14, with an expected participation of 350 schoolchildren from 80 countries. The prestigious event will see more than 40 awards up for grabs as students compete in various scientific disciplines.
The IBO is considered the top competition among high school students globally and ranks among the most significant events in education. Since 1996, Kazakh schoolchildren have actively participated in this scientific competition, achieving a commendable record of two gold, 20 silver, 54 bronze medals, and 14 honorary diplomas. This year, four schoolchildren will represent the Kazakh team.
Chairman of the Committee of Secondary Education, Kanibek Zhumashev, highlighted the extensive preparatory work being done to prepare the Kazakh team for the international-level tasks covering biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, anatomy, and animal physiology. Training camps held at the Daryn Center have been instrumental in honing the skills of the participants.
Director of the Daryn Center, Gazdembek Tursunov, emphasized the honor of hosting the Olympiad in Kazakhstan and praised the high levels of knowledge demonstrated by Kazakh schoolchildren. Investments have been crucial in facilitating funding for organizing and conducting the event, including the procurement of biology laboratory equipment, instruments, computers, multimedia resources, and interactive materials for the participants.
Following the conclusion of the Olympiad, the laboratory equipment will be handed over to specialized schools for use in the educational process. Adherence to established international standards is paramount, and the event will be based at Nazarbayev University, which boasts technical facilities that fully meet the requirements for conducting the Olympic rounds.
The upcoming International Biology Olympiad promises to be a platform for showcasing the talent and dedication of young scientists from around the world, with Astana playing host to this prestigious gathering of academic excellence.
