Kazakhstan to Increase Tariffs on Rail Freight Transportation, Impacting Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek – The 24.kg news agency reported that Kazakhstan will be increasing tariffs on rail freight transportation by 16 percent starting from March 7, 2025. This decision by Kazakhstan Temir Zholy company will not only affect export deliveries but also transit ones, which is crucial for countries like Kyrgyzstan.
Experts have noted that the tariff hike will have a significant impact on the cost of goods imported into Kyrgyzstan from Russia, particularly fuel and lubricants, which are essential components of the country’s economy. Kyrgyzstan heavily relies on imports from Russia, with 90 percent of its fuel and lubricants coming from there. These goods pass through Kazakhstan in transit.
With the increase in transit costs and the strengthening of the Russian ruble, prices for fuel and other goods in Kyrgyzstan’s domestic market are expected to rise. This development could potentially have adverse effects on the country’s economy and overall cost of living for its citizens.
It will be important for Kyrgyzstan to closely monitor the situation and potentially seek alternative transportation routes or solutions to mitigate the impact of these increased tariffs on rail freight transportation.
