Kazakhstan Youth Engage in AmCorners Debate Championship Across 10 Regions
The AmCorners Debate Championship in Kazakhstan saw over 400 participants from 10 cities engage in competitive and educational debates from April 27 to May 5. The championship, held in various American Corners across the country, offered master classes on the British parliamentary format and competitive debate in English. Both experienced debaters and beginners as young as 14 years old took part in the championship.
Debates are known to benefit participants by enhancing their knowledge, critical thinking, and self-confidence. The American Debate League highlighted that debates can also improve academic performance and access to higher education by enhancing literacy and public speaking skills.
Participants in the championship, including those from remote areas, improved their English language skills, public speaking, and analytical thinking. One of the coordinators described the championship as a journey of personal and academic growth for many participants.
Feedback from participants was positive, praising the competitive yet friendly environment provided by the championship. Despite challenges faced during the debates, including emotional strain, the event served as a platform for the further development of debate culture in Kazakhstan.
Debate not only helps in developing critical thinking and leadership skills but also promotes social skills and empathy. Participants learn to consider different viewpoints and enhance teamwork and mutual understanding, essential in today’s interconnected world.
