“Khojaly Massacre Martyrs Honored in Ceremony” – BRTK
President of the Assembly of the Republic, Zorlu Töre, delivered a poignant message on the anniversary of the horrific massacre that took place in the town of Khojaly in the Nagorno-Karabakh region on February 26, 1992. In his statement, President Töre emphasized the significant struggles that independent Azerbaijan has faced throughout history.
He highlighted the historical importance of Azerbaijan’s fight for independence, noting the entry of the Caucasus Islamic Army into Baku 106 years ago under the command of Nuri Killigil Pasha. President Töre also spoke about Azerbaijan’s struggle for independence following the control of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics after the withdrawal of the Turkish army.
President Töre recalled the tragic events of “Bloody January” in 1990 when the Red Army entered Baku and committed a massacre that claimed the lives of 130 civilians. He also mentioned the massacre in Khojaly in 1992, where 630 innocent civilians lost their lives in a genocide attempt.
Drawing parallels to ongoing conflicts in the modern world, President Töre highlighted the importance of recognizing and remembering past atrocities, including the suffering of the Turkish Cypriot People.
