The history of the stadium dates back to the construction work that began on the King Saud University campus in western Riyadh in the spring of 2011. The stadium was officially opened in May 2015, with a budget of 215 million riyals, in accordance with FIFA rules for international matches.
In 2020, the stadium underwent renovation to enhance its facilities and improve the overall experience for fans and players alike. As a result, it was able to host the Maradona Cup in 2021, a match played between Boca Juniors and Barcelona in memory of the late Diego Maradona, who passed away the previous year.
