Authorities Take Action Against Cockfighting in Ereğli District
The Ereğli District Gendarmerie Command and Konya Environment, Nature, and Animal Protection Teams have taken action after receiving a notice about cockfighting taking place in the district.
Upon receiving the tip, the teams immediately raided an animal barn belonging to an individual identified only as YG. There, they found evidence of cockfighting taking place and proceeded to capture 38 fighting roosters, one of which was unfortunately found dead and two others injured.
As a result of these illegal activities, the stable owner, YG, was slapped with an administrative fine of 21,684 liras in accordance with Article 5199 SKM 14/a. Furthermore, a total of 51 suspects involved in the crime of “Opposition to the Misdemeanor Law No. 5326” were collectively fined 327,675 liras, resulting in a grand total of 349,323 liras in fines.
In addition to the fines, legal proceedings have been initiated against the suspects at the instruction of the Public Prosecutor. Meanwhile, the 37 roosters that were rescued from the illegal operation have been taken under protection.
The swift and decisive action taken by the authorities emphasizes their commitment to upholding animal welfare laws and cracking down on illegal activities such as cockfighting. It serves as a warning to those who engage in such activities that they will face severe consequences for their actions.
