Uzbekistan to Use Cotton Stalks for Greenhouse Heating Instead of Coal
In an effort to reduce atmospheric emissions and promote environmentally friendly practices, Uzbekistan is partnering with Korea Western Power to transition greenhouse heating from coal to biofuel made from cotton stalks. This initiative aims to significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 120,000 tons over the next decade.
A recent visit by a Korean delegation, which included representatives from Korea Western Power and engineering company KICC, laid the groundwork for this project. Discussions centered around the construction of a biofuel plant in the city of Furkat in the Fergana region, with agreements already in place with city and regional administrations.
The shift to biofuel comes in response to challenges faced by greenhouse owners, including gas supply cutoffs in 2022. The Ministry of Energy mandated the use of alternative fuel in greenhouse operations, leading to the urgent restoration of gas supply and financial support for energy payments to affected farms.
To incentivize the transition from gas to coal heating, subsidies, preferential loans, and compensation for coal boiler purchases were announced throughout 2023. These efforts were further reinforced by the Ministry of Ecology, which issued warnings to greenhouse farms using environmentally harmful practices like burning old tires for heating.
By embracing biofuel made from cotton stalks, Uzbekistan aims to improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable agriculture in the region. This innovative approach highlights the country’s commitment to eco-friendly solutions and sets a precedent for green energy practices in the agricultural sector.
