Kremlin Critic Navalny Placed in Punitive Solitary Confinement
Aleksei Navalny, a prominent critic of the Kremlin, has reported that he was immediately placed in a punitive solitary confinement cell after completing a quarantine term at the Polar Wolf prison in Russia’s Arctic region. Navalny was transferred to this notorious and remote prison last month.
According to a series of messages posted on Twitter, Navalny stated that he was sentenced to seven days in solitary confinement by a prison guard who claimed that he had refused to introduce himself properly, did not respond to educational work, and did not draw appropriate conclusions for himself. These allegations led to the punishment, which includes being forced to take walks in the frigid prison yard at 6:30 a.m. in extreme temperatures that can reach minus 45 degrees Celsius or colder.
In a sarcastic and ironic series of posts, Navalny joked about the conditions he is facing, comparing himself to a character in the film The Revenant, and humorously musing about needing a roasted elephant to keep warm in such harsh weather.
The Polar Wolf prison, also known as IK-3, is a notorious facility located 2,000 kilometers northeast of Moscow. It holds about 1,050 of Russia’s most hardened criminals, including those convicted of the most serious crimes and serving sentences of 20 years or more, as well as some political prisoners.
The prison was established in 1961 on the site of a former camp of Josef Stalin’s Gulag network. It is known for its severe conditions and remoteness, with the surrounding settlement of Kharp mostly providing housing and services for prison workers and administrators.
Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison on extremism charges in August 2023, on top of previous sentences for fraud. He and his supporters maintain that the charges against him are politically motivated, and human rights organizations have recognized him as a political prisoner. Navalny has been a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has posed a significant threat to his regime.
Despite surviving a poisoning with a Novichok-type nerve agent in 2020, which he implicates Putin in ordering, Navalny continues to stand against the current administration. With Putin recently announcing his intention to seek re-election in March, Navalny’s continued imprisonment and mistreatment highlight ongoing concerns about the Russian government’s suppression of opposition and civil society.
