Ukraine’s Top General Warns of Deteriorating Situation in the East
On April 28, Ukraine’s top general issued a warning about the situation for Kyiv’s forces in the east, stating that Russia has been attacking “along the entire front line” and achieving “certain tactical successes.” This has forced Ukrainian troops to retreat to new defensive positions.
Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskiy, in a message on Telegram, stated, “The situation at the front has worsened,” explaining that the enemy has concentrated its efforts to break through the front line, creating a significant advantage in forces and assets. He highlighted the challenging conditions in the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove districts, where fierce battles are ongoing.
Syrskiy mentioned that the enemy deployed up to four brigades in these areas and is attempting to develop an offensive west of Avdiyivka and Maryinka. In response, Ukrainian commanders made the decision to move their forces to better-defended positions to ensure the safety of their troops.
While the battlefield claims could not be immediately verified due to heavy fighting, the situation remains tense in these areas.
In a nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on the European Union and NATO to expedite the process of allowing Ukraine to become a member of these Western organizations. He also revealed that Ukraine and the United States are working on a bilateral security agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation and security.
Additionally, reports emerged of a fresh attack by Russia on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, with authorities in the Mykolayiv region stating that Russian suicide drones targeted “heat-generating infrastructure” and severely damaged a hotel on the morning of April 28. The Ukrainian Air Force responded by destroying a Russia-launched drone over Mykolayiv and four others across the country.
This recent attack followed Russia’s heavy targeting of Ukrainian energy infrastructure on the night of April 26-27, resulting in significant damage to thermal power stations. Zelenskiy emphasized the urgent need for further air defense weapons from Western allies to defend against such attacks.
As the conflict escalates, Ukraine continues to face challenges in maintaining its energy supply, with Russian forces targeting critical infrastructure almost daily. The country has experienced significant losses in its thermal and hydropower capacities, leading to scheduled blackouts in some regions.
Despite the ongoing hostilities, the situation between Ukraine and Russia remains volatile, with both sides engaged in a dangerous and destructive conflict.
