Kyrgyz Officials Detain Leader and Members of Banned Islamic Group
Russia has accused the United States of being responsible for a deadly attack on Crimea on June 23, prompting a swift response from U.S. officials who pointed the blame back at Moscow for starting the war. The United States emphasized that the weapons provided to Ukraine are for defensive purposes against Russian aggression.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the attack near Sevastopol involved missiles supplied by the United States to Ukraine this year. They alleged that U.S. specialists set the missiles’ flight coordinates based on information from U.S. satellites.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller dismissed Russia’s claims as “ridiculous” and noted that Russia has a history of making false accusations. He reiterated that the United States provides weapons to Ukraine to defend its sovereignty, including Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.
Pentagon spokesman Major Charlie Dietz emphasized that Ukraine makes its own targeting decisions and conducts its military operations independently.
In response to Russia’s accusations, U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Moscow and warned that the attack on Crimea would not go unpunished. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov hinted at consequences for the United States’ involvement in the conflict.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the conflict has escalated with numerous civilian casualties and significant damage. Ukrainian forces have been targeting key Russian military installations in Crimea and other regions.
