Russian officials have accused Ukraine of targeting Moscow and several other Russian cities with a fleet of at least 24 drones. They claimed that most of the drones were downed by antiaircraft systems.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the drones were downed over Tula, Kaluga, and Bryansk, as well as the Russian capital of Moscow. Despite the attacks, no major damage was reported in any of the affected locations.
The reports of the attacks came after Ukraine claimed that at least nine Russian drones targeted their territory overnight on November 26. This came just one day after Russia launched a massive wave of drones against Kyiv and other sites, marking the biggest such attack since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and other officials reported that a mass drone attack was attempted overnight, with some buildings damaged but no injuries reported. In Tula, south of Moscow, one person was wounded when an intercepted drone hit an apartment building.
The Russian Army also said it had downed two Ukrainian missiles over the Azov Sea that were reportedly headed for Russia. Local authorities in the affected regions did not report any casualties.
Ukraine has been increasing its attacks on Russia since launching a counteroffensive, aiming to hit regions close to fighting zones as well as further inland into Russia, including Moscow.
The reported attacks led to flight delays and cancellations at several major airports in Moscow, according to local reports.
Despite the reported attacks, Ukrainian officials made no immediate comment. Meanwhile, fighting has been focused around the industrial hub of Avdiyivka, which appears almost encircled by Russian forces.
Ukraine has also reported Russian attacks in the south and east of the country, with Roman Mrochko, head of the military administration in the southern city of Kherson, stating that two urban districts were shelled. Meanwhile, nearly 400 localities in Ukraine were left without electricity due to bad weather and Russian attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other Ukrainian officials have warned of worsening weather conditions and an expected increase in Russian attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter sets in. This echoes Moscow’s campaign last winter, which left millions of Ukrainians in cold and darkness and destroyed critical power facilities.
Despite the challenges, Ukraine continues to stand strong in the face of escalating tensions and attacks. The situation remains difficult, but efforts to mitigate the impact of the attacks and to defend against further aggression continue.
